Question: What is abdominoplasty? Dr. Lawrence Shaw: A tummy tuck, or an abdominoplasty, is a phenomenal procedure, especially after childbirth, after you're done having children. It removes excess skin, it tightens the muscles of the abdominal wall, all the structures that are stretched during pregnancy and afterwards. If you look at this diagram, there's an incision that is made just within the hairline and does extend towards the sides, towards your hips and basically everything from the umbilicus down is removed and everything is then brought downward. The muscles, the rectus muscles, are run alongside and oftentimes there's a separation, or diastasis, of the rectus muscles. So those are brought together in the midline and bringing in the waist, tightening abdominal muscles and then the skin, as I said before, is brought down giving you a much tighter abdomen, all the excess skin, oftentimes a lot of the stretch marks of the abdomen are removed and a pre-pregnancy abdomen, or tummy, is achieved.
