If you opted to create your own web site using the free web site design software covered in part seven of our Web Site 101 series, you'll need to get those web pages and associated files to your site host's servers. File transfer protocol (FTP) is the answer. Simply enter your login info and server address (provided by your host) and send all your files!

Hi, this is Mike Callahan, Dr. File Finder and welcome back to our special butterscotch.com series on creating your website 101. In this segment, were going to take a brief look at FTP, File Transfer Protocol and FTPing your website files up to your web post. I've listed a number of excellent FTP programs in the show notes. I've personally have used all of them. All of them are excellent. I have here FTP Voyager. So to get started with it, you want to click connect. You are going to want to create a link to your site. We’ll say New Site. We’ll give it a name, I’ll say Doc. Description, Doc Site. FTP, its www.drff.com. Now, you don’t want to do anonymous login if you're logging in to your web host. So you do the login that was provided by your service provider. Say, save the password. Then we could say, connect. Now you see down here is the hard drive of the computer showing your files and folders. Now here, were on my website. In most cases, or in many cases, your website will go in a folder called Public_html. So we go in there. I obvioiusly have quite a few websites. But what you can do is go in to the area where you want to upload your site. Then on your computer side, pick a file that you want to upload. Most FTP programs are fairly similar in this regard. You can highlight it and click upload or you can click on it and drag it and see little plus in the arrow, let go. It brings up a dialogue showing that the files in progress. Again, in most cases, if you're going to over write a file that already has that name, you’ll get a warning. So many times, if you make improvements to your website, make changes, you go to upload it. It will say you will go to over write this file and that is your intention, so you just say okay or yes. So this is FTP, here I'm on my computer. Here I'm on my website. I then click to go back, go to one of my other sites. Go back to the root of my web host folder. So this is FTP, it’s very quick and simple. You can upload multiple files and it shows you the progress of the file transfer right down here. This is FTP, keep in mind, this is a multiple part series. Be sure to watch all the parts.
