Project Runway Laura Bennett Interview Audra Lowe: Well she is quick like lightning and she can design the most elegant evening wear in no time at all. She should get it down. She’s beautiful. She’s tall. She’s slender, red head. She was the second runner-up in season 3 on Bravo’s Project Runway and Laura Bennett is here today. She’s sharing all of her tips on juggling the career with motherhood. You got a new book out. It’s good to have you here Mama. Laura Bennett: Thank you for having me. Audra Lowe: I cracked up when I saw the book. Didn’t I feed you yesterday? You have six kids and it just says it all. “It Says it All”, how did you come up with that? Laura Bennett: You know I say that to my kids. I actually say that to them and they have my same sense of humor so don’t worry about them. It really just sort of sums up how you feel at the end of the day, I mean motherhood never ends. You go all day, this and that. You’re working, juggling things and then you get home, you’re exhausted and it’s just starting. Audra Lowe: And I wrote down some notes because you said something like you know that the pregnancy was the easy part. Motherhood that’s the tough part and you should know having six kids. When you were on the show, Project Runway Season 3, you we’re pregnant at the time. What was that experience like and being under a microscope because that’s not easy to do when you’re not pregnant? Laura Bennett: I know but I have been through several pregnancies already. That was my 6th pregnancy so I know enough to know if something went wrong to speak up. In a way, being there was almost easier because you have to imagine, normally I’m at home. I happen to take care of all these little people while my husband will have that job. Because here I was on a show where we’re sequestered, they’re telling when to eat, when to sleep, taking a sweat. Because it’s all kind of like fashion, I’m sort of like a fashion designing toddler for that. Audra Lowe: Interesting. But how had things changed since the show for you. Laura Bennett: I have the most amazing opportunities that came from that show. I mean I had no idea I was a fan of the show when I auditioned. I just had no idea how explosive it would be but obviously I get opportunities to write books. I did a line of clothing on QEC. It’s just been an amazingly positive experience. Audra Lowe: That’s great. Good things come out of it. Laura Bennett: Yes. Audra Lowe: You got the six kids you do say you don’t have a mini van? No backyard, you live here in New York City, how do you keep all the kids entertained and in the family? What do you guys do? Laura Bennett: We’ll we do live in a big loft and I’ve really just turned the apartment over to the kids. I don’t try to keep it all fancy. You know they’re swings and punching bags and we do actually have a mini van because it’s not even a mini van. It’s a van, van because I ran out of legal car seats. Because when we were kids we just piled of the back of the station wagon but it doesn’t work that way anymore. Audra Lowe: Well I have to mention, in your book you do address a lot of the things that are considered taboo from most moms like you know saying that yes I do have a favorite child. Yes I hate cooking and about flying with kids too. Now you know a totally different aspect of flying with kids. Laura Bennett: Yes, no. Its travel is the one thing that I won’t get right. No matter how many kids I have. Audra Lowe: It’s fun. Laura Bennett: It’s just so hard. And I hear the word vacation and I panic because it is no vacation for me. I just know. But the main thing is what I call the oxygen mask theory, do you know that women and mothers have to put on their own oxygen mask before assisting the child. You have to take care of yourself. You have to give yourself some time. Whatever it is that makes you happy. Audra Lowe: I’m telling you, if you guys don’t get any other book. You have to pick our book. A lot of mom tips in there too. So congratulations on the book. Thanks for stopping by too. Laura Bennett: Thank you. Audra Lowe: And if you guys want to get other tips on how to maintain your sanity and your style while being a perfect mom, you can pick up her book. Again, the title is called “Didn’t I feed you Yesterday?” and it’s available now. Thanks so much Laura.
