Zelana Montminy: The ponytail is a great go to your hairstyle since it’s so versatile and simple yet always looks chic. We’ve invited Ken Paves. He’s worked with Eva Longoria, Victoria Beckham and Jennifer Lopez to show us how he creates this Bella Sugar exclusive take on the wrap around pony. Ken Paves: So, the ponytail is a girl’s best friend. It’s always fun, flirty but always classic. I’m going to show you how I do it on clients like Jennifer Lopez and Nelly Furtado with a few simple tools. So, here’s what you’re going to need. You’re going to need a mixed bristle flat brush, a hooked elastic band, a little bit of hairspray, a clear elastic, a couple of bobby pins and if optional you may need a little extra hair—a wrap-around ponytail. So, the great thing about this is I’m actually starting on hair that’s already dry. So, step one is to pull your hair back. The first thing you want to do is create some grip, some texture with your hair. So, I go through with the firm hold hairspray adding a little bit of texture. With Briana’s highlights, you can actually see that line is coming up and away from her face. So, you want to take a flat brush and mixed bristle flat brush and pull all of the hair back and tight into a ponytail. I’ve secured the hair exactly where I wanted. I’m going to start with the hooked rubber band, the hooked elastic. Go ahead and place the hook into the hair, wrap it around the base of the ponytail and secure it in place. So, the ponytail’s incredibly classic but there are a couple of great ways to update it. This is something I did on Jennifer Lopez. I’m going to start with this wrap around ponytail. You could see there’s a comb just in the center, which I’m going to apply just into the base of her ponytail, wrap it around. There’s a bit of Velcro here for the attachment. This camouflages and conceals exactly where the extension is applied. I’m going to take the two bobby pins that we mentioned earlier, secure this in place. So, if you have enough hair and you’re not using the ponytail extension, the key is that you want to take a little bit of your hair from underneath and use that to wrap around and conceal where your ponytail is attached. Zelana Montminy: Bella Sugar’s giving one lucky reader a chance to win a hair makeover from Ken Paves. Ken Paves: So, the next step in this updated ponytail is I’m going to braid this halfway down. What you’re going to need for that is a clear elastic. Really important to secure and hold the braid is to add a little bit more spray for little bit more texture and grip then you want to braid about three or four sections down. Jennifer’s hair, we wowed with a bit of texture to it. But Brianna’s hair, we’re going to show you the way to do it with straight hair. When you get about halfway down, you want to use a transparent elastic band. Wrap it around three or four times where the braiding stops. Take your brush. Create a little bit of texture on the ends. So, ponytails are really great look but often from the front, the ponytail can look a bit plain. There are my hairdo clipping bangs. They have three clips in the front. Start with two just in the hairline and go all the way to the back, clip that in place and then shake them in place where you want them. Bangs are really hot trend that come and go. So, if you always want to be on top of the trend without committing to it, this is a great way to go with the clipping bangs. I have amazing clients like Nelly Furtado and Kim Kardashian who love this look. So, there you have it, my version of the updated ponytail. It’s a wrap around braid. It’s based on two looks I’ve created for Jennifer Lopez and Nelly Furtado but exclusive here for you at Bella Sugar. Zelana Montminy: So, when you’re pressed for time but still want to look polished, try Ken’s unique wraparound ponytail. Thanks for watching! See you next time!
