Chanel manicurist Tom Bachik, who has worked with Gwen Stefani, Beyoncé, and Victoria Beckham, shares his tips to getting a great manicure at home. How to Get the Perfect Manicure at Home Host: There are a few things you need to know to ensure that your manicure is perfect. I brought in Tom Baycheck who's worked with everyone from Victoria Beckham to Beyonce to Evil Ongoria to give us tips on how to get the perfect manicure. Tom Baycheck: One of the best ways is to actually do a dry manicure, I know its--it feels good, it’s the spa experience of soaking but your natural nails are actually porous, so when you soak, they can actually absorb the moisture and even change shape. Now when you get your manicure, the nails dehydrate, go back to the original shape and cause some of the pain on the edges. So when you’re petting your own cuticles, I recommend only the hang nails or excessive cuticle. An easy tip is to keep them pushed back, so let’s say you’re in the shower, use a little bit of hair conditioner on a wash rack and simply push back your cuticle while your skins nice and soft and then you’ll find that you almost never have to cut. I recommend when filing a natural nail to use a file that is 180 or higher. The number on the file talks about how soft or how course the file is, the higher the number, and the smoother the file. What buffing does is not only does it smooth out and give you that meticulous cuticle, it’s also going to smooth out the surface of the nail removing small imperfections that you have and the smoother the canvass is, the smoother the polish is going to be. Now you want to be careful not to over run, if you have large ridges in the nail, don’t buff those down because as they grow out, you’re going to find that you get splitting in the natural nail. So buffing should be done very lightly and use a lot of care. If you start buffing before you take out the hang on, you can catch it and pull it up even worse, so after you file and buff a nail, I’m going to use natural nail prep, at home you can use either acetone or alcohol. What this is going to do is it’s going to remove any of those little micro fine particles from the buffing as well as any oils and moisture contaminants out of the surface area. This makes a huge difference on how long your polish will last. Now with the base coat I’m going to polish all the way up to the cuticle. This help smooth out that area so that I can get a cleaner polish and then let the color and the top coat. At home, people like to shape their polish out, well by doing this; there are little edges in here that adds up to the color. It will actually help whip air into the polish, it creates bubbles. An easy way to prevent that is to simply roll the color between your hands to mix the color and then you’ll get a nice perfectly smooth coat, so starting here by firming the brush out it will follow the shape of the cuticle, come down and then I go in an angle and then I just smoothen it out. Add a little tripping trick is to actually the least amount that you play with the polish, the smoother and the better the results of the coverage will be. To make sure that we have a perfect polish and that’s the color the same distance away from the cuticle and on the fingers is I’m going to use a nail brush or at home you can use like an eye liner. Take a small brush using acetone, simply go around the cuticle area and then remove any excess polish that's on the skin or in the cuticle. If you have nails that are a little bit whiter, I’m actually going to take the brush and I’m going to remove a thin line of color on each side of the nail. What this does is it creates the illusion that they have a much narrower and long vivid nail shape. And now because the colors actually have time to drive in the cooling process, you’ll find that the colors dries much quicker because sometimes pop quotes are designed to go faster than what the color drives and it traps in the solvent and that’s why you can still mush and redo it later. Or by allowing it to drive through at least a moment in between, you’ll find that there’s a lot less chance of that messing up.
