The basic foundations of Gmail are solid. However, the system is designed to work the way Google thinks it should... that may not be the way you like to work. Google has created Google Labs so they can a toss out a variety of features and see which ones users really like. There are Google Labs features available that give Gmail more functionality.

Gmail 201: Intermediate Studies - #6 - Using Labs Features in Gmail Hi, this is Mike Callahan, “Doctor File Finder”. Welcome to part six of our special ButterScotch.com, ten part series on Gmail 201 intermediate studies. Now this segment I want to talk about Google labs. Labs is a function that Google has and a number of that’s offerings where they can present features and then get user input about which one they should implement. So in Gmail click on settings and down here by the angles see the labs tab, click on that and there’s quite a few things in here. You can get custom date formats, you can put your labels on the right side, you can hide the in the red counts, you can have advanced iMap controls. One here that I use and I recommend is the custom label colors. With custom label colors enable you can create a variety of colors both backgrounds and foreground so that you can get that unique look so that you have labels, colors, and filters to give you that folder type of function. Here’s multiple inboxes, so this is Google labs. They add new things to it so go back to the mailbox just to show you how the custom colors works and I’m going to pick one here in the daily notes and I can go down here to say add custom colors and as you can see you will let me change a background and then add a different text color. So essentially when I apply that I’m going to get a blue that’s going to have light blue Cyan leathers on it when it comes in to my email box. So Google Labs is a great way to try out different things, perhaps alter the way Gmail works for you as far as where things are placed on the screen and so on and that concludes part six.
