Celebrity hair & makeup artist Joey Maalouf gives us the steps to recreate Katie Cassidy's messy side braid from this year's People's Choice Awards. This look is an easy twist on a basic braid that has also been seen on Rachel McAdams at the Sherlock Holmes premiere and on the Alexander Wang Spring 2010 runway.

Katie Cassidy rocks an awesome messy braid at the 2010 people’s choice awards. I’m Joey Maalouf and with a few simple steps I’m going to show you how it’s done. The first step is going to be a really simple sectioning in the front on both sides by placing our pinky finger behind the ear and just sectioning of the hair to the crown of the head. This hair we’re going to move aside to the front and we’re going to work on the back area and section it into three almost equal sections, it doesn’t have to be too perfect. Step two, we’re going to take this back section and create a sexy side braid. Since she has bangs on this side, I’m going to go to the opposite side with the braid almost moving it forward towards the shoulder. so that you’ll get more of a braid when you push it all the way forward and I tend to let that tail at the end of the braid. So I’m going to leave about two inches and then you can just take your thumb fingers and mess up the braid just by taking the heart shape inside the braid and just push it up, it just makes a little more bohemian. Step three, we’re going to take each side one at a time and I’m going to lightly tease the bottom of the hair. We’re going to take the ends and just do a mini braid on the bottom of the section and then wrap it around my index and middle finger and I’m going to pin it behind the braid three times. And we’re going to repeat the same method on the other side and then when you put the braid over it, it hides it. And just to give it a little extra texture I like to take a little pieces and lift them up and just spray them slightly just to make it as messier as simple as you want. You see the messy side braid on Katie Cassidy, Rachel Mc Adams and on the runway with Alexander Wayne and now you know how to get the look.
