Interviewer: Cyrus is the new movie from the filmmaking team behind the Sundance favorite, The Puffy Chair. Cyrus is a funny and insightful look at love and family in L.A. Lauren was at the premier that kicked off the Summer Film Fest at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. (Music playing) Lauren Ezersky: I am here at Brooklyn Academy of Music otherwise known as BAM for the premier of Cyrus. It’s hot! (Music playing) I have to just say, I’m in love in those shoes. John C. Reilly: They’re actually golf shoes that I took the cleats off of. Lauren Ezersky: So you don’t play golf? John C. Reilly: I don’t play golf, no. But I love the way these shoes look. And the insides, they’re like kind of Birkenstock. I have so much to give, you know. I’ve always gifts, I’m like, I’m a blast. Female: We’re kind of like having a conversation here. John C. Reilly: Oh, okay. Female: So, uh… John C. Reilly: I’m going to have some conversations too here eventually. Lauren Ezersky: Well, tell me about this character a little bit ‘coz it’s kind of like he’s a little bit of a loser. He thinks he’s a little bit… but he’s really not. John C. Reilly: I felt a lot of kinship with the character emotionally. But I’m happily married for a long time. So, I wasn’t in a place that he was at. But, yeah, I brought a lot of myself to the character ‘coz we improvised a lot of the dialogue. And I’m really proud of the movie. I think it really, takes up really honest look at relationships and it’s awfully funny too. Lauren Ezersky: You’ve done big budget. Is it more fun to work on a smaller? John C. Reilly: I’ve done them all. You know? I like independent directors. These guys came up to the independent world that used to working on a much more modest scale. So, they had a lot of confidence in the way that they like to work. Lauren Ezersky: Well, thank you so much John C. Reilly. You’re really cute! John C. Reilly: Oh, well, are you flirting with me? Lauren Ezersky: I certainly am, yes I am, well, with all the boys. But you’re cute! How long have you been married for? John C. Reilly: I’m going on 18 years. Lauren Ezersky: Do you have a secret? John C. Reilly: I’m cute and I’m loyal. Lauren Ezersky: Loyal, hello! There you go! Thank you John C. John C. Reilly: Thank you! Mark Duplass: We just like to make relationship movies about people. Lauren Ezersky: Are you guys married? Mark Duplass: We are married but not to each other. Lauren Ezersky: This movie teaches you anything about relationships, what would it be? Mark Duplass: Um, it sort of about the fact that you can be honest and you can be forthright. You can be all the things you want to be. But that still doesn’t solve all your relationship problems. And we really like the idea of making a movie that, these guys really know what they’re doing. They’re smart. They’re sweet. They’re intelligent. But you know what, they find themselves in a really tough situation that they bail their way out of it. Lauren Ezersky: How did you get Marissa Tomei, you got an amazing cast, and John C. Reilly. Mark Duplass: Have you seen this face? Lauren Ezersky: It is very cute. Jay Duplass: We put her in a headlock. Lauren Ezersky: I think it’s going to be a hit. Mark Duplass: I hope you are so right. And that you are basically a fortune teller. Lauren Ezersky: So, what do you love about these two guys, these directors? Susan Sarnadon: Oh, they’re so generous. And they really made me feel safe and they’re very funny and then obviously very talented. Lauren Ezersky: Thanks for joining me at this premier. I’m Lauren Ezersky for Better. John C. Reilly: Listen to me you little weirdo, if you want to mess with me, I want to mess with you right now. (Knock on door) Oh, buddy. Marissa Tomei: Everything okay? John C. Reilly: Yeah. Interviewer: Cyrus opens nationwide today.
