Burberry Beauty Makeup Line Female: What was the most challenging part about creating the collection? Christopher Bailey: The most challenging part was just making sure that we were authentic and having a point of view and not getting bug down in opinion on what you should do when you're creating makeup and how you should do it. I really wanted this to have a strong and unique voice within a big market. So that was probably the most challenging to make sure that we kept consistent with everything else that we’re doing. It took us over two years to do this collection so that’s a longer time process than I’ve done with anything else. Female: Why is the line different from other makeup brands that are out there? Christopher Bailey: I think it’s really true to Burberry spirit. It’s very much about the philosophy of a trench coat. It’s for all different skin types and for all different types of lifestyles. It’s why in the ad campaign I wanted to have three different girls, completely different skin types, completely different attitudes but it was important to kind of talk to different worlds as well. And we’ll just continue with that philosophy as well. Female: So speaking of different skin types and skin tones, one of the things that I like to talk to readers about are universal colors. So our colors that worked on the pale golds and the type of girls and you can hear a couple of examples of your favorite things in your line that worked universally across many skin tones. Christopher Bailey: I think all the trench colors that we created were created to be universal. They were created I kind of started the process very much the way that we might create a fashion collection if we’re doing for example a coat and working with fabrics because that’s kind of the way most people deal with color. Does this color suit me with clothes? So we started working on that with all the different trench coats so you’ve got darker trench coats, paler trench coats but they are all very neutral. There is kind of softness to the colors so that’s the way that we approach that. But it’s an ongoing process as well so we will keep adding for different skin types as well. Female: Say for the blushes? Christopher Bailey: Yeah. Female: Which color would you say would go across the board for many different skin tones? Christopher Bailey: I think the trench blot -- we wanted it to be something that was consistent across everything with these neutral colors. I don’t know if you’ve tried them on but there all kind of the trenchy, neutral, beigey colors. And all the whole spectrum because I think it’s very difficult to say that’s one thing for all skin. It just doesn’t work. It’s normal which is why we’re all unique. So I don’t think it’s about just one thing but that works for everything but we try to do is create a collection that is send me a call that we can keep building on for the different skins. Female: Well, speaking of the blushes, I’ve tried a couple and they’re so smooth. I love the texture of the powder. Did you use any sort of cutting edge technology or? Christopher Bailey: We used a lot of technology but the important thing was instinct and does it feel right. I think I didn’t want to get bug down in technology because technology is just like a vehicle. What I wanted to do was to say, “Does it feel too heavy?” And if it does we need to change it. The whole kind of philosophy of the makeup is that it’s light, that it’s transparent, that it’s enhancing. It’s not about covering up your skin. It’s not about putting a cover on your skin. It’s about enhancing the beautiful things and maybe slightly hiding the things that you feel less good about. Female: Okay. Well, last question for you. This might be a little hard but what are your favorite items from the collection? Christopher Bailey: Okay, that’s a toughie but -- Female: It’s like choosing your favorite kid, is that right? Christopher Bailey: Yeah, exactly. I love the lipsticks because I love the whole experience of the lipsticks and I love the colors. I love the packaging so definitely the lipsticks. Female: I feel sorry to interrupt but the magnetic closure, genius. Christopher Bailey: Oh, brilliant. Thank you. Well, that’s kind of what lipstick for me is kind of one of my favorite things because I love the tactile element of the magnet. I like its functionality. I like its playfulness and I like the fact that it’s still an iconic makeup piece on your show.
